Maha Kumbh 2025: NCP Leader Mahesh Kothe Passes Away After Holy Dip in Prayagraj

In a tragic incident during the Maha Kumbh 2025, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) leader Mahesh Kothe passed away after suffering a heart attack following a holy dip at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj.

The 60-year-old leader, who had traveled to attend the shahi snan, collapsed in the river around 7:30 am on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. Despite being rushed to a medical facility, he was declared brought dead upon arrival.

Mahesh Kothe, a former mayor of Solapur, was known for his significant contributions to the city’s political and social landscape. He had recently contested the November 2024 Maharashtra assembly elections from Solapur North but lost to BJP’s Vijay Deshmukh.

Sharad Pawar, chief of NCP (SP), expressed deep sorrow at Kothe’s untimely demise. “The youngest former mayor of Solapur and my old colleague, Mahesh Kothe, passed away tragically in Prayagraj. He was a dynamic and dedicated leader who held great influence in Solapur. His loss is irreplaceable. Heartfelt condolences to the Kothe family,” Pawar tweeted.

Kothe is survived by his wife and son. His body will be brought to Solapur for the last rites on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the Maha Kumbh witnessed intense cold weather as 1.38 crore devotees took a dip at the Triveni Sangam on Makar Sankranti, marking the first Amrit Snan of the event. The confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati River remains a site of spiritual significance for millions.
