Luxury Cars, Gold, And 17 Tonnes Of Honey: Crores Recovered From Retired Madhya Pradesh Engineer

Bhopal:
A routine corruption probe turned into one of Madhya Pradesh’s most jaw-dropping scandals on Thursday when Lokayukta officials raided the properties of retired Public Works Department (PWD) Chief Engineer GP Mehra, unearthing staggering wealth — from gold worth over ₹3 crore to 17 tonnes of honey stored in his farmhouse.
What began as a standard inquiry into disproportionate assets soon snowballed into a story of greed, luxury, and bizarre opulence, stunning even seasoned investigators.
The early morning raids, led by four DSP-rank officers, were conducted simultaneously across four locations in Bhopal and Narmadapuram. At Mehra’s residence in Manipuram Colony, officials discovered ₹8.79 lakh in cash, jewellery worth ₹50 lakh, and fixed deposits of ₹56 lakh.
However, the real jackpot was found at his Opal Regency apartment, where investigators recovered ₹26 lakh in cash, 2.6 kg of gold valued at ₹3.05 crore, and 5.5 kg of silver.
The most bizarre find came from Mehra’s farmhouse in Saini village (Sohagpur, Narmadapuram) — a property straight out of a luxury lifestyle magazine. Officers found 17 tonnes of honey, six tractors, 32 cottages under construction, seven completed cottages, and even a private pond for fish farming. The property also featured a cowshed, a temple, and a fleet of luxury cars — including a Ford Endeavour, Skoda Slavia, Kia Sonet, and Maruti Ciaz, all registered under the Mehra family.
The Lokayukta team also raided KT Industries in Govindpura Industrial Area, suspected to be Mehra’s business front. They recovered ₹1.25 lakh in cash, industrial materials, and documents revealing the involvement of Mehra’s relatives as business partners.
By evening, the tally of seized assets resembled a royal inventory:
- ₹36.04 lakh in cash
- 2.649 kg of gold
- 5.523 kg of silver
- Multiple properties, luxury vehicles, fixed deposits, and shares
Officials said the valuation is still ongoing but is expected to reach several crores. Forensic experts have been roped in to analyse documents, digital files, and banking transactions to uncover potential benami investments.
A Lokayukta officer described the recovery as “one of the most extraordinary corruption cases in recent memory” — not just for the sheer wealth uncovered, but for its mix of luxury, absurdity, and audacity.
