Lunar Eclipse 2025: Spectacular ‘Blood Moon’ to Light Up the Sky on March 14 – Will India Get a Glimpse?

A mesmerizing celestial event is set to unfold on March 14, 2025, as a total lunar eclipse—commonly known as a Blood Moon—paints the night sky with a striking reddish hue. However, skywatchers in India will miss out on this rare spectacle since the eclipse will occur during the daytime in the country.
This total lunar eclipse, occurring after nearly three years since the last one in 2022, will be visible across North and South America, Western Europe, and parts of Africa. The breathtaking phenomenon will last over 65 minutes, offering an unforgettable sight for those in regions where the Moon is above the horizon.
Where Will the Lunar Eclipse Be Visible?
According to Dr. Rajendra Prakash Gupt, Superintendent of the Ujjain-based Jiwaji Observatory, the total lunar eclipse will be fully visible in:
North and South America
Western Europe
Western Africa
North and South Atlantic Ocean
Meanwhile, a partial eclipse may be observed in parts of Asia, Europe, Antarctica, Australia, and the Indian Ocean region.
What Makes the ‘Blood Moon’ Appear Red?
A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves directly between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that completely covers the Moon. The deep red color—often called a “Blood Moon”—results from the Earth’s atmosphere scattering sunlight. Only the longer wavelengths of light, like red and orange, pass through and reflect off the Moon, creating the mesmerizing crimson glow.
Although India will miss the Blood Moon this time, space enthusiasts can still follow the event online via live streams from observatories and space agencies worldwide.
