LPG Shortage Hits Major Indian Cities As Government Rushes Emergency Imports

India is facing a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders in several major cities, prompting the government to secure additional LNG and LPG supplies from other countries to stabilise the situation.
The supply crunch has begun affecting cities including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and Delhi, where restaurants and hotels are struggling to obtain commercial gas cylinders needed for daily operations. In some places, eateries have reportedly been forced to temporarily shut down due to the shortage.
The disruption comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East following the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran. The geopolitical instability has affected energy supply chains, contributing to delays and shortages of liquefied petroleum gas shipments.
Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah has written to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, urging immediate intervention to address the shortage in Bengaluru.
In his letter, the Karnataka Chief Minister warned that the lack of commercial LPG cylinders is already impacting everyday life and business operations. The request came after the Bangalore Hotels Association announced that gas cylinder supplies had been halted, severely affecting the hospitality sector.
Officials say the central government is working to import additional LNG and LPG from multiple countries to ease the shortage and restore supply across affected regions.
