LPG Prices Rise Across India Amid Supply Concerns; Check Latest Rates in Major Cities

Cooking gas has become more expensive for many households and businesses across India, as the government recently increased LPG cylinder prices amid ongoing global supply challenges.

The price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has gone up by ₹60, while a 19 kg commercial cylinder has become costlier by ₹144. These revised rates, introduced earlier this month, remain unchanged as of March 19.

Here’s how much LPG costs today in major cities:

  • New Delhi: ₹913 (domestic) | ₹1,884.50 (commercial)
  • Mumbai: ₹912.50 | ₹1,836
  • Kolkata: ₹939 | ₹1,988.50
  • Chennai: ₹928.50 | ₹2,043.50
  • Hyderabad: ₹965 | ₹2,105.50
  • Lucknow: ₹950.50 | ₹2,007
  • Bengaluru: ₹915.50 | ₹1,958
  • Patna: ₹1,002.50 | ₹2,133.50

The price variation across cities is mainly due to differences in local taxes(VAT) and transportation costs.

The hike comes at a time when global tensions are affecting energy supplies. India, which depends heavily on imports for both crude oil and LPG, sources a large portion from West Asian countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

With disruptions in key shipping routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, India has started sourcing oil from alternative regions like Russia and West Africa. However, these options come with higher costs due to increased freight and insurance charges.

To manage the situation, the government has prioritised LPG supply for households, ensuring that domestic needs are met first. Commercial users, such as hotels and restaurants, initially faced supply cuts, though some supply has since been restored.

In a relief for low-income families, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana have not been affected by the price hike, keeping cooking gas affordable for vulnerable households.

Overall, while supplies remain stable for now, global uncertainties continue to influencce fuel prices in India.
