Kerala Man Fined ₹2.5 Lakh for Deliberately Blocking Ambulance in Thrissur

THRISSUR: In a shocking incident, a man in Kerala was slapped with a hefty fine of ₹2.5 lakh for deliberately obstructing the path of an ambulance on a busy road in Thrissur. The Kerala Police acted swiftly after dashcam footage of the incident went viral on social media, drawing widespread outrage.

The incident took place on November 7 along the Chalakudy route leading to Thrissur Medical College. The video showed a silver Maruti Suzuki car blocking an ambulance on a narrow, two-lane road. Despite the ambulance driver continuously honking and using the siren, the car driver refused to make way, even preventing the ambulance from overtaking.

According to some reports, the ambulance was traveling from Ponnani with a critical patient onboard, making the situation even more alarming. The police, after examining the viral video, imposed the hefty fine on the car owner for not yielding to the emergency vehicle, as required under the Motor Vehicles Act.

In addition to blocking the ambulance, the driver was found to be operating the vehicle without a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC), compounding his violations.

As per Section 194E of the Motor Vehicles Act, failing to give way to an approaching ambulance or any emergency vehicle is a serious offense, punishable by imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of ₹10,000, or both. In this case, the penalty was significantly increased due to the deliberate nature of the driver’s actions.

The incident has sparked a conversation about the importance of prioritizing emergency vehicles and adhering to road safety rules. Police officials have urged citizens to treat giving way to ambulances as a moral duty, emphasizing that every second counts when it comes to saving lives.
