Kerala Court Issues Bailable Warrant Against Baba Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna Over Misleading Ads

A Kerala court has issued a bailable warrant against yoga guru Baba Ramdev and his associate Acharya Balakrishna in a case involving misleading advertisements. The case stems from a complaint filed by the Drugs Inspector in Palakkad, with the Judicial First Class Magistrate II ordering the warrant on January 16.
The charges, under Section 3(d) read with Section 7(a) of the Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act of 1954, relate to ads published by Divya Pharmacy, an affiliate of Patanjali Ayurved. These advertisements allegedly made unverified claims about curing diseases, drawing criticism for undermining modern medicine, including allopathy.
This is not the first time Patanjali and its founders have faced scrutiny. In the past, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) petitioned the Supreme Court against Patanjali’s claims, leading to a temporary ban on some of its advertisements. Following the apex court’s intervention, both Ramdev and Balakrishna issued public apologies for their misleading statements.
Multiple criminal cases regarding similar issues are also being heard in Kerala courts, including in Kozhikode. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for February 1.
