A month after the sudden demise of businessman Sunjay Kapur, fresh developments have emerged around a massive ₹30,000 crore property dispute involving his family. Sunjay, who was formerly married to Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, passed away on June 12.
Karisma Kapoor’s Alleged Interest in the Estate
According to reports from India.com and Dainik Jagran, Karisma Kapoor—who divorced Sunjay in 2016—is reportedly seeking a portion of his vast estate. However, there has been no official statement from her or her representatives confirming this claim.
Family Tensions Over Inheritance
Ahead of Sona Comstar’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Sunjay’s mother, Rani Kapur, has publicly asserted that she holds the majority stake in the Sona Group and is the rightful heir to the family’s assets. She has accused unnamed individuals of attempting to seize control of the group and clarified that she has not appointed any representative for the company.
Her legal counsel, senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, added that Rani Kapur has called for the AGM to be cancelled and warned against any new director appointments. Though no legal case has been filed, she has requested a postponement of the meeting and reserved her rights for further action.
Questions Over Sunjay’s Death
Rani Kapur has also raised concerns about the nature of her son’s death, which was officially attributed to cardiac arrest. Through her lawyer, she claimed the reported cause does not align with the actual circumstances. She further alleged that she was forced to sign certain documents under duress shortly after his death.

Sunjay Kapur, chairman of Sona Comstar, married Karisma Kapoor in 2003. They had two children, Samaira and Kiaan, before filing for divorce in 2014, which was finalized in 2016. He later married Priya Sachdev, with whom he had another son, Azarias.
Sunjay’s funeral was held on June 19 at Lodhi Road Cremation Ground in Delhi, attended by close friends and family.
