Jio Faces Setback as 79 Lakh Subscribers Switch to BSNL Amid Tariff Hikes
Reliance Jio, India’s largest telecom provider led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, has suffered a major blow, losing 7.9 million (79 lakh) subscribers in a single month. This decline, which occurred in September 2024, comes amidst widespread migration to state-owned BSNL, which has been making a strong comeback.
Data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reveals that private telecom providers collectively lost nearly 10 million (1 crore) users in September alone. Jio faced the biggest loss, followed by Vodafone-Idea (1.5 million) and Bharti Airtel (1.4 million). Meanwhile, BSNL gained over 5.5 million (55 lakh) new users between July and October 2024, solidifying its position as an appealing alternative to private operators.
A key factor driving this shift has been the significant tariff hikes implemented by private telecom players in June 2024. This pricing change prompted many users to reconsider their options and switch to BSNL, which has retained competitive pricing. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia praised BSNL’s resurgence, stating, “I see a huge opportunity in BSNL.”
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Robert Ravi confirmed that the provider has no immediate plans to increase tariffs, giving it an edge over competitors. Migration data from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) shows a consistent inflow of subscribers to BSNL, with 1.5 million switching in July, 2.1 million in August, 1.1 million in September, and 0.7 million in October.
This shift in user behavior marks a reversal of trends seen earlier in the year when users were leaving BSNL for private operators. The company’s competitive pricing and improved services have positioned it as a strong competitor to industry giants like Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.
The loss of subscribers highlights the growing competition in the telecom industry, with affordability and service quality playing a crucial role in user preferences. As BSNL continues its resurgence, private operators may face increasing pressure to adapt to changing market dynamics.
