Jay Vallabh: The Key Figure Behind Vijay Mallya’s Global Business Network

Jay Vallabh, a 64-year-old Indian-origin attorney based in Switzerland, has emerged as a pivotal figure in managing the offshore assets of liquor baron Vijay Mallya. Vallabh’s name appears as a director and authorized signatory across several offshore entities tied to Mallya, as evidenced by regulatory filings with the US Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) and company registries in jurisdictions like the Isle of Man and Panama.
Public records reveal that Vallabh, who is also identified as Jayprakash Vallabh in some UK filings, has established and dissolved numerous companies across multiple countries over the years. Notably, Vallabh and his wife, Susanna, were significant stakeholders in Watson Ltd, a Mauritius-based entity that once held a 21% stake in United Breweries (Holdings) Ltd (UBHL). This indirect holding translated to around a 12% stake in Kingfisher Airlines during its early years.
A 2011 order from the US Department of Transportation regarding a code-share agreement between Kingfisher Airlines and American Airlines confirmed that the Vallabhs held a substantial stake in Kingfisher through UBHL, though this stake dwindled as banks converted debt to equity.
In the Isle of Man, filings show that Jay and Susanna Vallabh are directors of CAS Nominees, which administers the Golden Eagle Trust—a critical financial vehicle for the Mallya family established in the 1980s. The trust was originally set up by Vittal Mallya, Vijay Mallya’s father. Additional filings indicate that the Vallabhs also manage Chilton Management, another Isle of Man entity linked to the trust, with shares held through offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and Liberia.
A 2000 SEC filing by Mendocino Brewing Company, one of Mallya’s declared assets, details Golden Eagle’s ownership structure, showing how its subsidiaries and offshore holdings like United Breweries of America tie back to Mallya’s global business interests.
Further records from the UK’s Companies House link Vallabh to Valley Heights Ltd, which is registered at a Swiss address. In total, Vallabh’s name has appeared in association with around 30 companies in the UK, although many of these have since been dissolved. The earliest record of his involvement dates back to 1997, tied to a non-compete agreement involving various Mallya-owned entities.
The intricate web of offshore vehicles and cross-holdings underscores the extensive network built by Mallya to manage his international business empire, with Jay Vallabh playing a crucial role in its administration. As Indian authorities intensify their scrutiny of Mallya’s offshore assets, Vallabh’s role in managing these entities has come under the spotlight.
