Indore Man Murdered on Meghalaya Honeymoon, Wife Still Missing

What began as a joyful honeymoon trip for a young couple from Indore has taken a heartbreaking turn — with the husband found murdered and his wife still missing in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills.

Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife Sonam had arrived in the scenic village of Nongriat on May 22. A day later, they checked out of their homestay and were never seen again. Concern turned to horror when, 11 days later, Raja’s body was discovered deep inside a gorge near the Weisawdong Parking Lot, nearly 25 km from where their rented scooter had been abandoned in Sohrarim.

Police now confirm that Raja was brutally murdered. The weapon — a dao (traditional machete) — and his mobile phone were recovered from near the site, confirming suspicions of foul play. “It is a clear case of homicide,” said East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem. “There is no doubt he was murdered.”

Sonam Raghuvanshi, his wife, remains missing. The police, along with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and a Special Operations Team, have continued intensive search operations in the gorge and nearby areas. Drones have been deployed, but so far, there is no trace of her.

Back in Indore, Raja’s family is shattered and demanding justice. His brother, Vipin Raghuvanshi, is calling for a CBI probe, alleging that the couple was kidnapped, robbed, and murdered. “There’s no way my brother and his wife could have taken their own lives. We believe they were targeted. The local police are not taking our concerns seriously,” he said.

The couple’s family had earlier announced a ₹5 lakh reward for any information on their whereabouts. As the mystery deepens, grief and outrage grow — both within the family and among the wider public.

The incident has shaken the state of Meghalaya, known for its warm hospitality and natural beauty. Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh called it “unprecedented” and urged the public to wait for the investigation to unfold fully. “Even if someone goes missing in Thailand, it doesn’t make Thailand unsafe,” he remarked, while assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has also stepped in, personally monitoring the case and coordinating with top officials and search agencies.

As the search for Sonam continues, so do the questions: What really happened to this couple? Who was behind the attack? And most heartbreakingly — where is Sonam?
