IndiGo Flight Declares ‘Mayday’ Over Low Fuel, Lands Safely in Bengaluru

An IndiGo flight operating between Guwahati and Chennai issued a ‘mayday’ call due to critically low fuel levels and made an emergency landing in Bengaluru on Thursday, sources revealed. The flight, carrying 168 passengers, landed safely, and both pilots involved have been derostered pending investigation.

The Airbus A321, operating as flight 6E-6764, took off from Guwahati at 4:40 PM and was scheduled to land in Chennai by 7:45 PM. However, due to air traffic congestion and adverse weather conditions, the flight was unable to land and had to execute a go-around. The aircraft was then diverted to Bengaluru.

During the diversion, the pilots realized the aircraft was running dangerously low on fuel and declared a ‘mayday’ — an international distress signal indicating a life-threatening emergency. The plane landed in Bengaluru at approximately 8:20 PM on June 19.

“The flight was unable to land in Chennai due to poor weather conditions. While diverting to Bengaluru, the aircraft encountered fuel exhaustion, prompting the crew to make a mayday call,” an IndiGo spokesperson confirmed.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to probe the incident, which occurred just days after another aviation emergency involving an Air India Dreamliner that crashed in Ahmedabad after take-off.

In a separate incident the following day, another IndiGo flight bound for Madurai experienced a mid-air technical issue and was forced to return to Chennai. The aircraft, which had 68 passengers on board, landed safely, and all passengers were deplaned without injury.

Authorities are now reviewing both incidents as part of ongoing safety assessments in Indian civil aviation.
