IndiGo Fined ₹25 Lakh by Customs; Airline Responds with Legal Measures

In a recent development, IndiGo, the leading Indian airline, has been slapped with a ₹25 lakh fine by the customs department. The fine pertains to an additional duty on residual Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF). The penalty was imposed by the Joint Commissioner of Customs, Ludhiana, as reported by PTI.
In response, InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, stated in a regulatory filing that it would take appropriate legal action regarding the demand for additional duty. The filing emphasized that the fine would not have any material impact on the airline’s financials, operations, or other activities.
In addition to the fine, IndiGo has faced some criticism on social media. IPL cricketer Abhishek Sharma shared his negative experience with the airline on Instagram, describing a delay at the Delhi airport that caused him to miss his flight. He highlighted the “unacceptable” behavior of the staff, particularly a counter manager, which led to a ruined holiday.
IndiGo also came under fire from Padma Shri awardee and former Infosys board member Mohandas Pai, who criticized the airline for making passengers wait for hours on a flight in Bengaluru without air conditioning. After passenger protests, the staff reportedly used a generator to provide cooling.
These incidents have raised concerns about IndiGo’s customer service, alongside the recent fine imposed by the customs department.
