Indian Student Arrested in US for Scamming 78-Year-Old Woman by Posing as Federal Agent

New Delhi:
A 21-year-old Indian student, Kishan Kumar Singh, was arrested in North Carolina’s Guilford County for attempting to scam a 78-year-old woman by pretending to be a law enforcement official. Singh, a student visa holder since 2024, is facing serious charges after the victim was pressured to withdraw a large sum of money under the false claim that her bank accounts had been compromised.

According to the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office, Singh contacted the elderly woman, telling her that her financial accounts were at risk and urged her to withdraw funds for “safekeeping.” Singh then appeared at her home to collect the money, identifying himself as a “federal agent.” He was arrested on the spot.

Singh has been charged with felony offenses, including attempted obtaining property by false pretenses and exploitation of an elder adult. He is currently held in the Guilford County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.

The Sheriff’s Office issued a public reminder, highlighting the increasing number of scams targeting seniors, especially in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The office stressed that legitimate law enforcement will never ask for money over the phone, urging people to educate their loved ones about such scams.

This incident follows similar cases involving other Indian nationals, who were arrested earlier for similar scams targeting elderly individuals across the US.
