India Ready and Vigilant Amid Covid-Like Virus Surge in China, Says Govt

In light of a surge in respiratory illnesses in China, including Covid-like human metapneumovirus (HMPV), the Indian government has reassured citizens that the country is well-prepared to handle any potential impact. During a Joint Monitoring Group (JMG) meeting on January 4, 2025, chaired by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS), experts from WHO, ICMR, and NCDC assessed the situation and reviewed India’s preparedness.

The meeting followed reports of rising cases of respiratory illnesses in China attributed to seasonal viruses such as HMPV, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). While concerns have been raised globally, Indian health authorities emphasized that no unusual surge in respiratory cases has been observed domestically.

“India’s surveillance systems for Influenza-like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) are robust, and recent data shows no alarming trends,” the Health Ministry stated. It added that preparedness drills conducted nationwide confirm the country’s readiness to address any spike in cases.

The ICMR has assured the public that enhanced laboratory testing for HMPV is being implemented as a precautionary measure. “While these viruses are globally prevalent, including in India, the current trends are typical for the winter season and do not indicate any unusual patterns,” the ministry explained.

The outbreak in China, marked by overwhelmed hospitals and rising HMPV cases, has drawn significant attention. However, Chinese authorities have labeled the situation as seasonal and manageable, urging calm.

Indian officials have echoed a similar sentiment, encouraging vigilance without panic. “Our preparedness measures and robust health systems ensure public safety,” they stated, while urging citizens to stay informed and follow health advisories.

With no unusual increase in respiratory illnesses and proactive measures in place, India remains confident in its ability to handle the situation, even as it closely monitors developments in China.
