Hungarian Tourist’s Solo Trek Ends in Tragedy: Body Found Weeks After Disappearance in Meghalaya

In a heartbreaking end to what was meant to be an adventurous journey, the body of Hungarian tourist Zsolt Puskas was found in a decomposed state nearly three weeks after he went missing in Meghalaya’s Cherrapunji.
Zsolt, who had arrived in the region with hopes of exploring its natural beauty, was last seen on March 29. CCTV footage confirmed he had checked into a hotel in Laitumkhrah at around 3:45 AM and checked out just a few hours later, at 9:00 AM. By noon, a local taxi had dropped him at Mawsahew near Sohra, from where he reportedly set off alone on a trek toward Nongriat, carrying only a backpack.
When there was no contact from him for several days, the Hungarian Embassy raised the alarm on April 2. This prompted a coordinated search-and-rescue mission by Meghalaya Police, Home Guards, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local volunteers.
On Wednesday, after an extensive search, Zsolt’s body was discovered in the forested slopes of Ramdait village along the trekking route to Tyrna in Shella. The terrain where he was found was steep and remote, and authorities suspect he may have accidentally fallen during his trek.
Local officials continue to investigate the incident, while the tragic discovery has left both his family and the local community mourning the loss of a traveler who came seeking beauty and adventure—and never made it back.
