How Wadhawan brothers, arrested for fraud, enjoy privileges in jail

DHFL promoters Kapil and Dheeraj Wadhawan enjoying special privileges while in judicial custody for their alleged involvement in a ₹34,610 crore bank fraud. Instead of experiencing the hardships of prison life at Taloja Central Jail, the brothers were seen orchestrating secret outings under the pretense of medical check-ups at government hospitals in Mumbai.
Luxury Behind Bars
Despite being under investigation for one of India’s largest financial frauds, the Wadhawan brothers appeared to be living comfortably. They were spotted engaging in deep business and family discussions, enjoying meals, sipping coffee, using mobile phones, and even signing important documents—all in the parking lots of hospitals where they were supposedly taken for medical examinations.
Fraud Trail: A ₹34,610 Crore Scam
The Wadhawan brothers are accused of defrauding a consortium of 17 banks of a staggering ₹34,610 crore. The case is being closely investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Escaping Jail Rules
An investigation by India Today TV revealed how the brothers frequently left prison under the guise of medical check-ups. On August 7, Kapil Wadhawan was taken from Taloja Jail to KEM Hospital for a supposed examination, but instead, he was seen meeting family members in the parking lot and accessing his private car. A similar incident occurred with Dheeraj Wadhawan when he was escorted to JJ Hospital on August 9.
History of Rule-Breaking
This isn’t the first time the Wadhawans have flouted the law. In 2020, they made headlines for violating the nationwide COVID-19 lockdown by traveling to Mahabaleshwar with a group of 20 people. They managed to obtain special travel permission from senior IPS officer Amitabh Gupta—who now, ironically, serves as Maharashtra’s Additional Director General of Prisons.
Authorities Take Action
Following India Today’s explosive report, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered an official inquiry. Sanjay Patil, a senior officer at Navi Mumbai Police Headquarters, announced new security measures, including GPS tracking and CCTV cameras in prison vans, to prevent further misuse of jail transfers.
As an immediate response, Navi Mumbai Police has suspended one official and six constables from the escort team responsible for transporting the Wadhawan brothers. The investigation continues, and authorities have promised strict action against those responsible for facilitating their illegal privileges.
