Hero or Villain? Anil Kumble Questions Ravindra Jadeja’s Approach in Lord’s Test Loss

Despite Ravindra Jadeja’s valiant unbeaten knock of 61, India suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the hands of England in the Lord’s Test on Monday. Chasing a challenging target, the Indian batting order collapsed, with Jadeja fighting a lone battle as wickets kept tumbling around him. India was bowled out for just 170 runs in the second innings, falling short in what could have been a famous victory.
While many hailed Jadeja’s resilience, some experts felt he could have done more. Among them was legendary spinner Anil Kumble, who expressed disappointment over the all-rounder’s cautious approach. Speaking after the match, Kumble said he had expected Jadeja to take a few more risks, especially against England’s part-time spinners and slower bowlers.
“He could’ve attacked Chris Woakes, who’s not express pace, and even gone after Bashir and Joe Root. The pitch wasn’t offering sharp turn, so it wasn’t too risky. Jadeja has faced tougher conditions and better bowling attacks before,” said Kumble.
“He rightly avoided risky singles with Bumrah and Siraj at the other end, but there were moments when he could’ve taken a chance. You have to be willing to take calculated risks in those situations,” Kumble added, hinting that a more aggressive strategy might have turned the tide for India.
However, not everyone agreed. Former captain Sunil Gavaskar acknowledged Jadeja’s efforts and offered a more sympathetic view, pointing to the challenge of batting with the tail on a tricky surface.
“He was trying to manage the strike and avoid exposing the tailenders too much. Playing aerial shots on that pitch was risky. I think he did what he could, especially since India often tries to take the game deep,” Gavaskar said in an interview with India Today.
India’s skipper Shubman Gill also came to Jadeja’s defence after the match, calling him “one of the most valuable players” in the team, underlining his contributions across formats and situations.
While debates continue over what could have been, Jadeja’s innings remains a bittersweet highlight in India’s narrow loss at Lord’s.
