Heartbreaking UK Blast Kills 7-Year-Old Boy; Drug Dealer Jailed for 14 Years
In a deeply tragic incident in Newcastle, a seven-year-old boy, Archie York, lost his life when a powerful explosion tore through his home — the result of an illegal cannabis lab operating just below his flat. The blast, which also killed 35-year-old Jason Laws and injured six others, occurred in the early hours of October 16, 2024, on Violet Close in Benwell.
At the heart of the devastation was Reece Galbraith, 33, who was using highly flammable butane gas to manufacture cannabis concentrates. His reckless operation led to an explosion that destroyed six homes and displaced over 140 residents — many of whom have still not been able to return. Galbraith, who was himself badly injured, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and drug offences. He has now been sentenced to 14 years in prison.
Little Archie had been fast asleep upstairs when the explosion struck. His mother, Katherine Errington, described him in court as “cheeky, kind, and full of life,” expressing her heartbreak over the senseless loss. She and her seven-week-old son Finlay were buried under debris and were pulled to safety by Archie’s father, Robbie York.
“This is a truly devastating case which rocked our community,” said Detective Chief Inspector Katie Smith of Northumbria Police. “Our thoughts remain with Archie’s family and all those affected by this unthinkable tragedy.”
