Heartbreaking Terror Attack in Pahalgam: 26 Tourists Killed, Nation Mourns as Leaders Call for Justice

Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir:
In one of the deadliest terror attacks in recent memory, at least 26 tourists were killed and several others injured in a horrifying shooting in the serene meadows of Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley on Monday. The attackers, reportedly emerging from nearby woods, opened indiscriminate fire on innocent holidaymakers, leaving behind scenes of panic and grief.
Military helicopters were swiftly deployed to evacuate the injured, as the picturesque valley—accessible only by foot or horseback—turned into a zone of chaos and sorrow. Heart-wrenching visuals from the site showed wounded tourists lying helplessly on the ground, while others, including women, cried out for help.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah rushed to Srinagar and convened an urgent security meeting with top officials from multiple agencies. He also briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who condemned the attack in the strongest terms, reaffirming India’s resolve to stamp out terrorism.
“An Abomination,” Say Leaders as Grief Grips the Nation
Calling the massacre an “abomination,” former J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed his shock and horror, stating the attackers were “inhuman and worthy of contempt.” Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha vowed severe punishment for the perpetrators, saying, “They will pay a very heavy price for this heinous act.”
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called the attack “an act of cowardice,” while Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge labelled it “a blot on humanity.” PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti demanded a thorough probe, pointing out the long-standing tradition of Kashmiri hospitality that makes such violence all the more disturbing.
Families Shattered: Tourists from Karnataka, Maharashtra Among the Dead
Among the victims were two tourists from Maharashtra—Dilip Disle and Atul Mone—and one from Karnataka, Manjunath Rao, a realtor from Shivamogga, who was shot dead in front of his wife and 18-year-old son. Both survivors are currently safe and under official care.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis convened emergency meetings and pledged full support to the families of the victims. “We stand with the grieving families. Every necessary step will be taken,” said CM Fadnavis.
Amid Pilgrimage Season, Security in Focus
The brutal attack comes as the region prepares for the annual Amarnath Yatra, scheduled to begin July 3. With registrations already underway, the timing of the assault has intensified calls for tighter security and a crackdown on infiltrators.
Union Minister Shah, who had recently chaired a high-level security meeting in J&K, had already emphasized the need for “complete eradication of terrorism” with a zero-tolerance approach.
As the country reels from the tragedy, the focus remains on rescuing the injured, supporting the affected families, and bringing the attackers to justice. For now, the scenic valleys of Pahalgam—once a symbol of peace and natural beauty—echo with sorrow, anger, and a collective call for justice.
