Popular YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra, known for her travel channel Travel with Jo, has recently found herself at the center of a national security investigation. The 33-year-old content creator from Haryana, who often shared her travel experiences with thousands of followers, was arrested on May 16 on charges of espionage for Pakistan. “Today, I have returned to my country, India, after a 10-day trip to Pakistan. I received immense love from the people there. Our subscribers and friends came to meet us. The two days we spent in Lahore weren’t enough,” she wrote in one entry. She described Pakistan as “crazy and colourful,” noting that the warmth she experienced couldn’t be captured in words. In a heartfelt plea, she urged Pakistani authorities to “protect the temples there and allow Indians to reunite with families separated in 1947.”
But behind these seemingly innocent reflections, authorities claim a deeper, more alarming story. Jyoti is one of 12 individuals arrested over the past two weeks across Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh on suspicion of being part of a Pakistan-linked espionage ring. Her international travel patterns and financial transactions are now under intense scrutiny, with officials saying her known income didn’t align with her frequent foreign visits.
Investigators are also analyzing her laptop for evidence and plan to question individuals who were in contact with her. A key development in the case points to her alleged relationship with Ehsan-ur-Rahum, also known as Danish—a Pakistani official formerly posted at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi. The two reportedly met in 2023 when Jyoti visited the High Commission for a visa. Ehsan-ur-Rahum was expelled from India on May 13 for engaging in activities deemed incompatible with his diplomatic status.
Hisar SP Shashank Kumar Sawan commented that Jyoti appeared to be groomed as an “asset” by Pakistani intelligence, describing the case as part of a new wave of “modern warfare” that goes beyond traditional battlefield tactics. He added that authorities are examining possible connections between her travel to Kashmir—shortly before the Pahalgam attack—and her trips to Pakistan.
