Four AC Mechanics Found Dead in Delhi; Suspected Gas Leak Blamed for Suffocation

New Delhi:
In a tragic incident in south Delhi’s Dakshinpuri area, four air conditioning mechanics were found dead inside their residence, with police suspecting suffocation caused by toxic fumes from a possible chemical leak used during AC servicing.

The incident came to light after Zishan, a cousin of two of the victims, alerted authorities when repeated calls to his brother went unanswered. A police team responded and, upon arriving at the 25-square-yard home, found it locked from inside. After gaining access with the help of locals, officers discovered the four men unconscious on the first floor.

They were immediately rushed to Dr. Ambedkar Hospital, and subsequently referred to Safdarjung Hospital and AIIMS Trauma Centre. While three were declared dead on arrival, the fourth man, Hasib, died during treatment. The deceased were identified as Imran alias Salman (30), Mohsin (20), Hasib, and Kapil alias Ankit Rastogi (18), all originally from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Police said the one-room residence also served as an informal workshop cluttered with AC repair tools, cylinders, and other equipment, leaving little room for ventilation. Initial findings suggest that the men may have suffocated due to gas leakage from a refrigerant cylinder, though the exact cause will be confirmed after autopsies.

A senior officer stated there were no signs of forced entry, struggle, or physical injuries on the bodies. A forensic team has examined the site, and relevant samples have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL).

Relatives told the police that the men were under financial pressure and had come to Delhi seeking work opportunities. Kapil, the youngest, had lost his father and was supporting his family. Hasib too was working to send money home. “They would often skip meals just to send extra money to their families,” a relative shared.

The four were known to take up assignments through local contractors and online platforms. Neighbours described them as quiet and hardworking, often staying indoors and working long hours.

Senior officials from the South District Police are overseeing the investigation, which is being led by the ACP of Ambedkar Nagar. Authorities await the autopsy and FSL reports to confirm the cause of death.
