Former West Indies Captain Richie Richardson Endorses Shubman Gill as India’s New ODI Skipper

Former West Indies captain Richie Richardson has voiced strong support for Shubman Gill’s appointment as India’s new ODI captain, praising the young cricketer’s leadership qualities and temperament. Speaking at a Golf Day event for Cricket West Indies, powered by the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) in New Delhi, Richardson said he believes senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still have the ability to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The decision to hand Gill the reins of the ODI team after India’s recent Test triumph over West Indies at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium came as a surprise to many, especially with Rohit Sharma’s last assignment being the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. The move has sparked speculation about the future of India’s veteran stars Rohit and Kohli, who will be nearing 40 and 39, respectively, by the time of the next World Cup.

Richardson, who has scored over 12,000 international runs across formats, said, “Gill proved his leadership mettle in England and managed to perform with the bat while captaining the side. I’m sure he’ll receive great support from senior players like Rohit and Virat — and that’s exactly what any young leader needs.”

He added, “No player can continue forever, but if world-class players like Rohit and Virat support Gill, it’ll only strengthen Indian cricket.”

Gill has already shown promise as a leader — guiding India to a 2-2 draw in the five-Test series in England and leading Gujarat Titans to the IPL playoffs this year. During the England tour, he amassed 754 runs in five Tests, including four centuries, marking a record-breaking performance.

Backing Rohit and Kohli’s potential World Cup participation, Richardson said, “They’re two world-class players. If they have the desire and motivation, I don’t see why they can’t make it. It’s just about whether they’re willing to put in the effort — they still have what it takes.”

The former West Indies skipper, who led his side in 24 Tests, also expressed confidence that the Men in Maroon could bounce back in the ongoing Test series against India, with the second match scheduled in Delhi.

Discussing the state of West Indies cricket, Richardson acknowledged the challenges but said the team was determined to rebuild. “We’re aware of what needs to be done. With the World Test Championship and T20 World Cup ahead, there’s a lot of work. We’re here to strengthen partnerships with India and get support for our revival,” he noted.

Richardson emphasized that the Caribbean side has “tremendous talent” that requires proper nurturing and a strong grassroots structure to restore the team’s glory. “India has always been supportive of us, and we’re confident of a bright future,” he said.

On his visit to India, Richardson expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality: “I’ve always loved visiting India. The fans here have shown us immense love over the years, and it feels wonderful to receive the same affection again. We’re delighted to be part of this event.”
