Farmers End Protest, Traffic Restored on Delhi-Noida Expressway
Farmers protesting for compensation and reforms vacated the Delhi-Noida Expressway after talks with police, allowing traffic to resume smoothly. The demonstrators, primarily from Punjab, had earlier announced a ‘Delhi Chalo’ march to Parliament to push for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and other agricultural benefits.
The protest escalated as farmers broke through police barricades near Dalit Prerna Sthal in Noida, but a resolution was reached following discussions with officials. Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Shivhari Meena stated, “The farmers communicated their demands, and officials assured them of further action. Traffic is now back to normal.”
Key demands raised by the farmers include 10% developed plots for those displaced by land acquisition, implementation of legal protections, and the adoption of welfare recommendations proposed by a state committee. The protest was spearheaded by groups like Bhartiya Kisan Parishad (BKP), Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), and Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM).
Meanwhile, authorities implemented extensive security measures at Delhi’s eastern borders, including drone surveillance and anti-riot preparations. Additional Commissioner of Police Sagar Singh Kalsi emphasized their commitment to ensuring public convenience during the protests.
On a related note, the Supreme Court urged farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike at the Khanauri border, to discourage protests that disrupt essential routes. The court acknowledged the farmers’ right to peaceful demonstrations but stressed the importance of avoiding public inconvenience.
Justice Surya Kant, addressing Dallewal’s legal representative, remarked, “You have a democratic right to protest, but it should not obstruct vital lifelines like the Khanauri border. The farmers’ grievances are being considered in an ongoing case.”
