Devendra Fadnavis Set to Return as Maharashtra CM Amidst Mahayuti Alliance Talks

MUMBAI: Devendra Fadnavis has been confirmed as the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra following the BJP’s massive win in the assembly elections, securing 132 seats. The announcement was made by a senior BJP leader, stating that Fadnavis will be officially elected as the legislature party leader in a meeting on December 2 or 3.
Shinde Supports BJP’s Decision
Outgoing Chief Minister Eknath Shinde expressed his support for the BJP’s choice, emphasizing that he and Shiv Sena fully back the decision. Speculation about his son Shrikant Shinde potentially being appointed as Deputy CM and Shiv Sena’s interest in the Home portfolio remains unresolved.
Oath-Taking Ceremony on December 5
The new government, formed by the Mahayuti alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP), will take the oath of office on December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to attend. However, it is still unclear if only the Chief Minister and Deputy CMs will take the oath or if ministers will also be sworn in.
Alliance Dynamics and Challenges
While Shinde insists on unity within the Mahayuti alliance, differences have surfaced among its leaders. Shiv Sena MLA Gulabrao Patil criticized the inclusion of Ajit Pawar-led NCP, claiming it affected their electoral performance. Meanwhile, BJP leader Raosaheb Danve suggested that a united BJP-Sena front would have secured an even bigger victory.
A Rested Shinde Reassures Stability
After taking a brief respite in his native village due to health concerns, Shinde assured reporters of his recovery and reiterated that the alliance remains united. “Our government’s work will be remembered in golden words,” he said.
The Mahayuti alliance secured 230 out of 288 seats in the assembly, with BJP leading at 132, Shiv Sena at 57, and NCP at 41. Despite the electoral success, the final structure of the government and allocation of key portfolios are yet to be finalized.
