Delhi’s Connaught Place, Key Areas Submerged After Torrential Rainfall

New Delhi:
A heavy spell of rain coupled with thunderstorms lashed the national capital on Tuesday morning, causing significant waterlogging across multiple areas. Among the worst affected was Connaught Place (CP), Delhi’s commercial hub, which received more than 100.2 mm of rainfall in just two hours.

Social media was flooded with visuals of CP streets under knee-deep water, where vehicles — including scooters and cars — were seen navigating through submerged roads. In one video shared by NDTV, pedestrians and drivers struggled to move as water surged beneath tyres and spilled across sidewalks.

Despite the short duration of the rain, its impact was widespread.

“This is Connaught Place, the city’s central business district. Just one hour of rain brought it to this state. What happened to our drainage system?” asked a user on X (formerly Twitter) in a post that went viral.

Several other parts of Delhi reported similar flooding. Areas around Ambedkar Stadium, known for hosting football events, were also inundated. Waterlogging was also captured on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg and in Pragati Maidan, where vehicles were seen slogging through flooded roads. Kamla Nagar market was similarly affected.

In response, Delhi Traffic Police issued multiple advisories, asking commuters to avoid heavily waterlogged routes. Major disruptions were reported near the Azad Market Railway Underpass and Ram Bagh Road, prompting traffic diversions from areas like Rani Jhansi Road, Pul Mithai, Barfkhana, and Veer Banda Bairagi Marg.

An additional alert was issued for the area around GTK Bus Depot. Travelers from Singhu Border (NH44) to Model Town or Kingsway Camp were advised to take Mukarba Chowk and the Outer Ring Road instead. Those going in the opposite direction were redirected via Road No. 51 and Azadpur Chowk.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of continued heavy rain in Delhi and surrounding regions until August 4.
