Delhi’s Air Quality Plummets to ‘Severe’ for First Time This Season Amid Dense Fog

New Delhi: On Wednesday, Delhi experienced the worst air quality in the country, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching the “severe” category for the first time this season. The central pollution watchdog attributed the sudden spike to an unusually dense fog, describing it as a temporary “episodic event.”
As of 4 p.m., the city’s 24-hour AQI stood at a worrying 418, a significant jump from 334 the day before. This severe reading could prompt authorities to impose stricter measures under Stage 3 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) to curb the hazardous pollution levels.
However, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) offered a glimmer of hope, suggesting that stronger winds expected from Thursday could help reduce pollution levels. The AQI is likely to return to the “very poor” category in the coming days.
