Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Attacked During Public Meet, Attempt To Murder Case Filed

New Delhi:
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was assaulted during a public hearing at her residence on Wednesday morning, leaving her with injuries to her head and hand. The attacker, identified as 40-year-old Rajesh Sakriya from Rajkot, Gujarat, was immediately overpowered by security personnel and taken into custody. An attempt to murder case, along with charges of assaulting and obstructing a public servant, has been registered against him.
According to sources, Rajesh was reportedly upset over the Supreme Court’s recent order to round up stray dogs in Delhi-NCR and relocate them to shelters. His mother confirmed he was a dog lover and deeply disturbed by the ruling.
Witnesses said the man approached the Chief Minister during the ‘Jansunwai’ with some documents, spoke to her briefly, and suddenly slapped her, pushed her, and pulled her hair before being restrained.
The Chief Minister’s Office termed the incident “premeditated”, citing CCTV footage that showed the accused conducting reconnaissance outside her residence a day earlier, recording videos, and preparing for the assault. The footage has been handed over to the police for investigation.
Senior BJP leader Harish Khurana condemned the attack, stressing the need to probe whether it was politically motivated. Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa also alleged a possible conspiracy by rivals threatened by Rekha Gupta’s governance work.
Opposition leader Atishi from AAP strongly condemned the violence, saying: “In democracy, disagreement and protest have space, but violence has none. We hope the strictest action will be taken and that the Chief Minister recovers fully.”
The Delhi Police have launched an inquiry into the major security lapse, with Commissioner SBK Singh personally monitoring the probe.
