Delhi Braces for Chilly Days Ahead as Temperatures Drop to 5°C Amid Dense Fog and Improved Air Quality

As freezing winters tighten their grip on Delhi, the national capital is preparing for even colder days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a drop in minimum temperatures, with the mercury expected to touch 5°C by Friday.

Fog and Weather Conditions

On Tuesday, dense fog blanketed Delhi, reducing visibility to as low as 150 meters at Palam during the early hours and delaying 25 trains. The Safdarjung Observatory, Delhi’s main weather station, reported a maximum temperature of 16.2°C, slightly above normal, and a minimum temperature of 10.5°C.

The IMD has forecast mainly clear skies with cold day conditions at isolated places. Dense morning fog is expected in some areas, while smog or moderate fog may persist across most parts of the city.

Air Quality Improves Slightly

Delhi’s air quality showed a minor improvement on Tuesday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) dropping to 296 in the “poor” category. This is a relief compared to Monday’s AQI of 335, which fell under the “very poor” category.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has lifted Stage 3 restrictions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) due to improved wind conditions, though curbs under Stages 1 and 2 remain in effect.

What’s Next?

As temperatures continue to dip and fog dominates the mornings, Delhiites are advised to prepare for chilly weather ahead. The weather office has also warned of cold day conditions at isolated places, urging residents to stay warm and cautious during the early hours.
