China Cautions Against Making It an Issue: Reaction to Modi-Trump Meeting

Beijing Responds to US-India Talks on Defence and Indo-Pacific Strategy
China has reacted cautiously to the recent meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump, emphasizing that their bilateral cooperation should not target or harm the interests of a third country. Speaking on the matter, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun highlighted that the Asia-Pacific region is meant for peaceful development, not geopolitical rivalry.
The Modi-Trump talks, held in Washington, focused on strengthening defence cooperation and reaffirming the importance of a close US-India partnership for maintaining a free, open, peaceful, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region. In response, Guo stressed that international relations and collaborations should contribute to global peace, stability, and prosperity without targeting any specific nation.
Guo further warned against forming exclusive alliances or engaging in bloc politics, suggesting that such actions would not enhance security or stability in the Asia-Pacific region or globally.
The joint statement from the Modi-Trump meeting announced the launch of the ‘US-India COMPACT’ (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) initiative, aimed at advancing defence ties. The leaders also emphasized strengthening the Quad partnership, which includes India, the US, Japan, and Australia.
China has been wary of the Quad alliance, viewing it as an attempt to counter its growing influence in the region. The Indo-Pacific area, including the South China Sea—where China’s territorial claims are contested by Vietnam, The Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Taiwan—remains a sensitive geopolitical issue.
Modi’s meeting with Trump, shortly after the latter began his second term, has drawn significant attention from Beijing, particularly concerning the deepening defence cooperation between India and the US.
