Chennai Man Killed In Brutal Pitbull Attack, Owner Booked For Negligence

Chennai:
A 55-year-old man was mauled to death by a neighbour’s Pitbull in Chennai’s Jafferkhanpet area on Tuesday, police said.

The victim, identified as Karunakaran, was attacked on a narrow residential street and died on the spot due to severe injuries. Eyewitnesses described the attack as “brutal,” with the dog biting the victim’s genital area.

The Pitbull’s owner, Poongodi, was also injured while attempting to restrain the animal. She is undergoing treatment and will be arrested for negligence after discharge, officials confirmed. Police are also probing whether she had obtained a licence for the dog.

Residents said they had repeatedly urged the owner to relocate the dog, citing safety concerns in the congested neighbourhood, but their warnings were ignored. Veterinary officials have since captured the Pitbull and sent it for observation.

This incident comes amid a spate of dog attacks in Chennai. Last year, a girl was mauled by Rottweilers at a city park, while earlier this month, an auto driver was injured by two Rottweilers being walked by a minor. In that case, the owner was arrested and the dogs were seized.

With rising cases of pet dog attacks, the Chennai Corporation is considering stricter measures, including mandatory muzzling of aggressive breeds in public spaces. The tragedy also coincides with the Supreme Court’s interim order directing Delhi authorities to capture and shelter stray dogs.
