CBI Closes Sushant Singh Rajput Case, Finds No Evidence of Abetment

After four years of investigation, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has officially closed the case related to the tragic death of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The agency found no evidence to support claims of abetment to suicide, giving a clean chit to Rhea Chakraborty and her family, sources confirmed on Saturday.

Sushant, 34, was found hanging in his Mumbai apartment on June 14, 2020. His untimely demise shocked the nation, sparking numerous theories and prompting an intense investigation. His father, KK Singh, had accused his then-girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty of mental harassment, financial exploitation, and playing a role in his death, leading to an abetment of suicide case being filed by Bihar Police.

The CBI took over the case in August 2020 and conducted a detailed investigation, including forensic analysis of electronic devices and crime scene examinations. A forensic team from AIIMS also ruled out foul play, confirming it was a case of suicide. Over 20 individuals, including Rhea Chakraborty, were questioned.

Following the closure of the case, Rhea’s lawyer, Satish Maneshinde, expressed gratitude for the thorough investigation but criticized the media trial and public scrutiny Rhea faced. He highlighted the hardships she endured, including 27 days in jail, and emphasized the importance of a fair judicial process.

Meanwhile, in October 2024, the Supreme Court upheld the Bombay High Court’s decision to cancel the CBI’s lookout circulars issued against Rhea and her family. The court criticized the petition, calling it “frivolous” and suggesting it was influenced by the high-profile nature of the case.

With the CBI now closing its probe, the case that gripped the nation finally reaches its conclusion, leaving behind a reminder of the dangers of media sensationalism and public trials.
