Cab Driver by Day, Gangster by Night: Neeraj Bawana Gang Member Arrested After 3-Year Hunt

Delhi Police have arrested a 34-year-old man associated with the notorious Neeraj Bawana gang, who had been on the run for nearly three years. Identified as Sonu, the accused had been declared a proclaimed offender in a 2022 arms trafficking case.

To evade police detection, Sonu fled to Mumbai and began working as a cab driver, maintaining a low profile. Despite relocating, he allegedly remained in contact with gang members and continued his involvement in illegal activities.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) Amit Kaushik stated that Sonu, a Class 10 dropout, was introduced to the gang through contacts in Panipat. He reportedly played a significant role in sourcing and supplying illegal firearms.

In September 2022, one of Sonu’s associates, Sachin, was arrested by Bawana police. The operation led to the seizure of four pistols, two magazines, 79 live cartridges, and five barrel-cleaning rods from two vehicles. Sonu managed to escape and went underground, leading a double life in Mumbai. By April 2023, a local court had declared him a proclaimed offender.

After extensive surveillance, police traced Sonu to Madh Island in Mumbai and arrested him on July 2. He was presented before a magistrate in Borivali, where a transit remand was granted for his transfer to Delhi.

Authorities revealed that two of Sonu’s close aides, Arvind and Deepak Pakasma, remain at large and are suspected to have fled the country.

Sonu also has a prior criminal record, including a 2019 case filed under the Uttar Pradesh Excise Act in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.
