Burqa On Statue Of Liberty? MAGA Outrage Over Zohran Mamdani’s Victory

Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old Democratic Socialist of Gujarati Muslim heritage, recently won New York City’s Democratic mayoral primary, making history as a potential first Indian-American and Muslim mayor of the city. However, his win has triggered a wave of Islamophobic backlash, particularly from far-right MAGA supporters and conservative politicians.

Prominent Republican figures, including Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, have shared Islamophobic content targeting Mamdani. One widely circulated image shows the Statue of Liberty covered in a black burqa, accompanied by the caption “Congratulations New York.” Another Republican, South Carolina Representative Nancy Mace, posted a photo of Mamdani in traditional attire with the caption, “After 9/11 we said ‘Never Forget.’ I think we sadly have forgotten.”

Social media users joined in with inflammatory and bigoted comments, portraying Mamdani’s win as a threat to American values and falsely suggesting a future under Sharia law. One user wrote, “NYC in 2025: Elects Muslim jihadist! NYC in 2040: Obey Sharia Law or leave!”

Mamdani has been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump’s immigration policies and of billionaire donors supporting political opponents. He has also condemned the Israeli military actions in Gaza, calling them “genocide,” while clarifying that his views are not anti-Semitic.

Reacting to Mamdani’s win, Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, calling him a “100% Communist Lunatic” and mocked his appearance and intelligence. He claimed Mamdani had support from “AOC+3” and even “our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer.”

In response, Mamdani addressed Trump during a Democratic debate, stating, “I am Donald Trump’s worst nightmare — a progressive, Muslim immigrant who fights for what he believes in.”

Interestingly, despite the uproar over the Statue of Liberty, historical records show that the original inspiration behind the statue was a veiled Egyptian woman, as envisioned by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. The design was later altered into the Roman-style figure now standing in New York Harbor after Egypt declined the initial proposal.
