Bobby Mohanty Alleges ₹4.59 Lakh Credit Card Fraud, FIR Filed in Mumbai
In a troubling case of cyber fraud, Bobby Mohanty, the honorary consul for Maldives in Mumbai, has filed a police complaint after ₹4.59 lakh was allegedly siphoned off using his credit card without his knowledge.
According to Mohanty, the fraudulent transaction took place in Jakarta in October 2025 while he was on a flight from Delhi to Mumbai. His wife immediately alerted the bank after receiving a transaction notification, and Mohanty himself followed up as soon as he landed, requesting the bank to block the transaction.
However, he claims the bank failed to act in time. Despite clear warning signs of a high-value international transaction, the bank neither flagged nor stopped the payment, he alleged.
Following his complaint, Juhu Police registered an FIR against unknown persons under charges of cheating, forgery, and provisions of the IT Act related to identity theft and impersonation. Authorities have now launched an investigation, and bank officials may be questioned to determine if there was any lapse or internal involvement.
Mohanty also raised concerns about the bank’s response after the incident. He stated that instead of resolving the issue promptly, the bank allegedly imposed finance charges and penalties on him for transactions he did not make, which negatively affected his CIBIL score.
After repeated follow-ups, the bank reportedly reversed around 50% of the disputed amount (₹2.29 lakh) after about 40 days — something Mohanty sees as an acknowledgment of fraud. He has also approached the RBI Ombudsman and even written to the RBI Governor, seeking justice.
He further suggested that the possibility of internal collusion between bank staff and cyber fraudsters cannot be ruled out and has called for an independent investigation into the matter.
The case highlights growing concerns around digital payment security and the responsibilities of financial institutions in safeguarding customers against fraud.
