Bihar Reels Under Nature’s Fury: 25 Lives Lost in Lightning Strikes and Hailstorms

In a devastating turn of events, at least 25 people lost their lives across Bihar on Thursday as lightning strikes and hailstorms swept through multiple districts, leaving families shattered and communities mourning.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Nalanda district was the hardest hit, reporting 18 fatalities. Two lives were lost in Siwan, while Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad each reported one death.

Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed deep condolences over the tragic loss of lives and announced an ex gratia of ₹4 lakh to the families of each victim. The back-to-back weather-related fatalities have alarmed the state, as just a day earlier, 13 people had also died in lightning strikes across four districts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an ‘orange alert’ for several regions, including Darbhanga, East Champaran, Gopalganj, West Champaran, Kishanganj, Araria, Supaul, Gaya, Sitamarhi, Sheohar, Nalanda, Nawada, and Patna. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds of up to 50 kmph are expected to continue through Friday and Saturday.

Patna, the state capital, witnessed water-logging in various areas as it recorded 42.6 mm of rainfall till 5:30 PM. Despite the downpour, officials from the Patna Municipal Corporation and district administration claimed that drainage efforts minimized the disruption.

As Bihar faces the wrath of unpredictable weather, families mourn their loved ones, and authorities brace for more storms ahead.
