At Least 19 Killed in Deadly Car Bomb Explosion in Northern Syria, Mostly Women

A devastating car bomb explosion rocked the outskirts of the northern Syrian city of Manbij on Monday, claiming the lives of at least 19 people, the majority of whom were women. The attack left over a dozen people wounded, including several women in critical condition, according to hospital workers.
The blast occurred near a vehicle transporting mostly female agricultural workers. 18 women and one man were killed in the explosion, reported Mohammad Ahmad, a nurse at the local hospital. The car bomb also left 15 women injured, many seriously.
While no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, the city of Manbij, located in northeastern Aleppo province, has been a hotspot for violence, with this being the seventh car bomb explosion in the area in just over a month. The region continues to suffer instability, even after the fall of President Bashar Assad’s regime in December.
Tensions have been escalating as Turkish-backed factions, known as the Syrian National Army, have clashed with the US-backed Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). These factions seized Manbij from the SDF in early December during a rapid military offensive.
Residents of Manbij have grown increasingly vigilant, with some taking efforts to protect neighborhoods and install surveillance cameras in the city, as the violence continues to impact daily life.
Munir Mustafa, deputy director of civil defense, warned that these continued attacks threaten the stability and post-war recovery efforts in Syria. “The ongoing violence against civilians is deepening the humanitarian crisis, disrupting agricultural and educational activities, and putting lives at further risk,” Mustafa said.
This attack follows another car bombing in Manbij just days earlier, which killed four civilians and wounded nine, further adding to the region’s already dire situation.
