Asaduddin Owaisi Joins ‘Lights Off’ Protest, Calls Waqf Law a Threat to Community Rights

Hyderabad MP and AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi took part in a symbolic ‘Lights Off’ protest at his residence on Wednesday night, lending support to the nationwide call by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) against the recently passed Waqf (Amendment) Act.
From 9 PM to 9:15 PM, homes and establishments across several parts of the country turned off their lights in silent dissent. Speaking to reporters afterward, Owaisi said the protest had made its mark and thanked all those who stood in solidarity.
He emphasized that the new law poses a direct threat to the existence and autonomy of waqf boards, calling it “unconstitutional” and a violation of fundamental rights. The protest, he said, is meant to send a clear message to the Narendra Modi-led central government that the Muslim community strongly opposes the legislation.
Owaisi added that the AIMPLB will escalate its agitation in the coming weeks, with plans to organise human chains and roundtable conferences. The movement will continue until the Centre withdraws the Act.
In a separate statement, Owaisi also condemned the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, expressing deep sorrow and calling out the targeting of Hindu victims after being asked about their religion — a practice he termed both inhuman and dangerous.
