“As Delhi Swelters, Power Minister Ramps Up Action to Tackle Record-Breaking Electricity Demand”

With Delhi’s temperature soaring to 43.9°C and power demand hitting an unprecedented peak of 8,423 MW at 3:06 PM — the highest ever recorded in the city by June 12 — Power Minister Ashish Sood convened a critical review meeting with the capital’s three power distribution companies.

In the meeting, Mr. Sood issued clear directives: upgrade infrastructure immediately to handle the surging electricity load. Emphasizing the gravity of the situation and forecasts predicting continued high temperatures, he urged companies to stay fully prepared for further spikes in demand.

He also laid out a comprehensive action plan:

  • Rapid Response Systems: Instructed firms to minimize restoration time during power outages caused by storms, rainfall, fallen trees, or other natural disruptions.
  • Infrastructure Overhaul: Directed replacement of old power grids, laying of new cables, and adoption of modern technologies for power generation and distribution.
  • Fault Detection: Called for installation of real-time systems that can detect faults and allow immediate intervention.
  • Data Analysis: Urged companies to utilize data-driven strategies to improve efficiency.

A strong push for solar energy was also made. Mr. Sood asked companies to promote rooftop solar panel installations among all electricity consumers and explore supplying solar power to areas without conventional meter access. He also encouraged replication of the Kilokri battery bank model across Delhi to improve power storage and backup.

Among the companies, Tata Power-DDL reported successfully managing a peak demand of 2,407 MW without outages or grid strain. The company attributed its success to robust summer preparations, including preventive maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and increased field staffing.

Meanwhile, BSES outlined its use of advanced AI and ML-powered forecasting models in collaboration with IMD-POSCO, which help predict power usage with high accuracy and optimize planning — saving both time and resources.

Mr. Sood concluded by warning that negligence will not be tolerated, and reiterated the government’s firm commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power during the extreme summer months.
