Amid Tensions, Arshad Nadeem Distances Himself from Neeraj Chopra Amid Javelin Rivalry

Pakistani javelin star Arshad Nadeem has chosen to stay silent on his long-time sporting rival Neeraj Chopra, citing the current cross-border conflict between India and Pakistan. This comes in the wake of backlash Neeraj faced for inviting Nadeem to the now-postponed NC Classic javelin event in Bengaluru.

The event, originally scheduled for May 24, was put on hold following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. Although the attack occurred before Neeraj extended his invitation, he was still targeted online for reaching out to the Pakistani athlete during heightened tensions.

“I don’t want to make any comments about Neeraj because of the ongoing conflict with India,” Nadeem said during a media interaction. “I come from a village and I will only say that my family and I always stand with our army,” he added, underlining his allegiance during these politically sensitive times.

Neeraj Chopra, who clinched gold at the Tokyo Olympics and recently achieved a personal best of 90.23m in Doha, had earlier stated that while he respects Nadeem, the two have never been particularly close off the field. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Nadeem had out-thrown Chopra to win gold, fueling further comparisons and rivalry.

Despite the political climate, Nadeem remains focused on his goals. “I always compete with myself. My dream is to hit the 100-meter mark,” he said, staying committed to his athletic ambitions. He acknowledged Chopra’s recent success with a short but civil, “If Neeraj is doing well, it’s good for him.”

While diplomacy may be on hold, the rivalry between the two javelin giants continues—defined more by their throws than their words.
