Air India Pilots Abort Take-Off at 155 Km/Hr in Delhi, Another Flight Skids in Mumbai

A potential disaster was narrowly avoided on Monday when Air India flight AI2403 from Delhi to Kolkata aborted its take-off after pilots detected a technical issue while speeding down the runway. The aircraft, already accelerating at 155 km/hr, came to a halt after the cockpit crew applied emergency brakes, strictly following Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).
Scheduled for departure at 5:30 PM, the flight was grounded for further inspection, with all passengers safely disembarked. Air India issued a statement confirming the incident, saying, “Flight AI2403 has been rescheduled for later this evening due to a technical issue detected during the take-off roll. Our cockpit crew discontinued the take-off in line with SOPs. We regret the inconvenience and are supporting all passengers. Safety remains our top priority.”
Meanwhile, a second Air India flight faced trouble in Mumbai. The aircraft, arriving from Kochi, veered off the rain-slicked runway during landing. According to government sources, one of the wheels skidded into a grassy area, damaging three signage boards and four edge lights along the runway.
Air India confirmed that the aircraft has been grounded for checks, and both pilots have been taken off duty pending a detailed investigation.
Nine Safety Notices Issued to Air India
In the wake of rising concerns over safety, the Ministry of Civil Aviation disclosed in the Rajya Sabha that Air India has received nine show-cause notices over the past six months related to five separate safety violations. Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol noted that while no major adverse trends were found in reliability reports, enforcement action has been completed in one case.
Ongoing Scrutiny After Fatal Crash
This series of safety concerns follows last month’s devastating crash of Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London, which claimed 260 lives, including 241 passengers. Only one survivor was pulled from the wreckage—seat 11A. The plane crashed into a building adjacent to a hospital shortly after takeoff.
The tragedy has triggered intense scrutiny of Air India’s operations, with aviation authorities conducting comprehensive inspections and implementing stricter oversight protocols.
