After Pahalgam Attack, Jaishankar Tells UK: “Zero Tolerance for Terrorism”

In the wake of the devastating terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke to his British counterpart, David Lammy, reaffirming India’s unwavering policy of “zero tolerance” toward terrorism.

Amid rising tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, Lammy also held discussions with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, who stressed the need for de-escalation in the region.

India has strongly pointed to “cross-border linkages” in the Pahalgam attack and vowed to deliver severe punishment to those responsible. “Spoke to Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy of the UK today. Discussed the cross-border terrorist attack at Pahalgam. Underlined the importance of zero tolerance for terrorism,” Jaishankar shared in a social media post after the conversation.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Foreign Office claimed that Ishaq Dar raised concerns about India’s “unilateral” actions, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty — calling it a violation of international obligations. Pakistan warned that any move to disrupt the water flow would be considered an “act of war.”

In retaliation to the attack, India announced strict measures against Pakistan: suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, shutting down the operational land crossing at Attari, and downgrading diplomatic ties. Pakistan responded by closing its airspace to Indian flights and halting all trade, including through third countries.

The Jaishankar-Lammy discussion follows British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he condemned the “barbaric” attack. In recent days, several world leaders — including US President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and others — reached out to PM Modi to express solidarity with India.

On Sunday, during his ‘Mann ki Baat’ address, PM Modi assured the nation that justice would be served. “The perpetrators and conspirators of this attack will be served with the harshest response,” he declared. “The whole world stands with the 140 crore Indians in our fight against terrorism.”
