“A Life Lost Too Soon: 20-Year-Old Dental Student Dies by Suicide Amid Exam Stress in Bengaluru”

In a heartbreaking incident that has once again highlighted the silent struggles students face, a 20-year-old dental student in Bengaluru died by suicide on Sunday, reportedly due to intense exam-related stress.

Soumya, a second-year student at KLE Dental College, took the drastic step around 12:45 pm by jumping from the fourth floor of her residence at Victory Harmony Apartment in the Hebbal area. According to officials, she had been battling depression linked to academic pressure.

Police suspect that the mental burden of upcoming exams may have pushed her to take her own life. An official investigation has been launched.

This tragic loss comes just weeks after Karnataka witnessed a disturbing spike in student suicides—at least five such cases were reported earlier this month from across the state, including Mysuru, Ballari, Davanagere, Haveri, and Bengaluru. These incidents were believed to be linked to distress over Class 12 exam results.

In response, Karnataka’s Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa had emphasized that no student was being declared a failure. “This is just the first round of exams. We have planned three rounds in total. Students who didn’t pass now will have two more opportunities. We are only announcing the results of those who passed, not failing anyone,” he explained.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also addressed students directly, urging them not to lose hope. “Life is much bigger than one exam. There will always be another opportunity. Please don’t make hasty decisions. Stay calm, composed, and know that your life matters,” he said.

Soumya’s passing serves as a painful reminder of the unseen emotional weight young students often carry. It underscores the urgent need for better mental health support and compassionate academic systems.
