Raghav Chadha Raises Alarm Over Traffic Crisis: Metro Commuters Losing Up to 168 Hours a Year

India’s growing traffic problem in major cities has now become a national talking point, with Raghav Chadha highlighting the serious impact it is having on people’s daily lives.

Speaking in Parliament, the Aam Aadmi Party leader pointed out that commuters in cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Kolkata, and Chennai are spending between 100 to 168 hours every year stuck in traffic — not moving, just waiting.

Calling the situation alarming, Chadha said that many metro cities are turning into “giant parking lots,” where people lose valuable time sitting in congestion instead of reaching their destinations.

According to the TomTom Traffic Index 2025, Bengaluru ranks among the worst globally, with commuters losing up to 168 hours annually, followed closely by Pune at 158 hours. Even in Delhi, people spend over 100 hours a year stuck in traffic jams.

Chadha stressed that this isn’t just an inconvenience — it’s a major economic and social issue. Every hour wasted in traffic means lost productivity, increased fuel consumption, rising pollution levels, and a decline in overall quality of life.

To tackle this growing crisis, he called for a National Urban Decongestion Mission, focusing on improving public transport systems, implementing smarter traffic management, and introducing scientific parking policies.

The problem becomes even worse during monsoons, when waterlogged roads further slow down already congested traffic.

Beyond time and money, traffic jams are also affecting people’s health. Long hours in traffic expose commuters to harmful air pollutants, increasing the risk of respiratory problems, heart disease, and stress-related conditions.

Chadha concluded by saying that if India wants to move forward economically, its cities must first become more efficient and mobile.
