Thai Cargo Ship Bound For India Attacked Near Strait Of Hormuz; Crew Missing

A Thai-flagged cargo vessel sailing toward India was attacked near the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, as tensions continue to rise in the Middle East.
The ship, Mayuree Naree, had departed from Khalifa Port and was heading to Kandla Port when the incident occurred.
Crew Rescued, Three Still Missing
According to the Royal Thai Navy, 20 crew members have been rescued, while three sailors remain unaccounted for.
The rescued crew were reportedly pulled from the water by the Royal Navy of Oman, which responded to distress signals from the vessel.
Authorities said search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate the missing crew members.
Ship Caught Fire After Attack
Images released by Thai authorities showed thick black smoke rising from the ship’s hull and upper structure, while life rafts floated nearby, indicating that crew members had evacuated the vessel.
The 178-metre-long bulk carrier, owned by Thai shipping company Precious Shipping PCL, reportedly has a displacement of about 30,000 tonnes.
Officials said the exact cause of the attack is still under investigation, and no group has claimed responsibility so far.
Rising Threat To Commercial Shipping
The incident comes amid escalating tensions following military strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran earlier this year.
In response, Tehran has warned that shipping routes in the Strait of Hormuz could become targets, raising concerns for global trade and energy supply.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations had earlier reported that three commercial ships were attacked in the Gulf region, though it is not yet confirmed if Mayuree Naree was among those vessels.
Strategic Shipping Route
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant share of global oil and cargo shipments pass every day.
Any attack on commercial vessels in this corridor can disrupt global trade, energy supply chains, and regional stability.
