Sameera Reddy Says She Was Forced To Use Fairer Makeup In Films, Opens Up About Body Shaming And Postpartum Struggles

Bollywood actress Sameera Reddy has opened up about the harsh beauty standards she faced during her early years in the film industry, revealing that she was often asked to use lighter makeup to appear fairer and was repeatedly made to feel insecure about her height and body.
In a recent interview with Mid-Day, the actress spoke candidly about industry pressures, motherhood, online trolling, and how she rebuilt her confidence after stepping away from mainstream cinema.
“I Was Always Made To Feel I Wasn’t Slim Enough”
Sameera revealed that during her acting career, there was a constant pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty norms.
She shared that makeup artists were often instructed to apply fairer makeup on her face and even on her body, something that made her uncomfortable.
According to the actress, she was also frequently told she was “too tall” and “too big”, which affected her self-confidence.
“As an actor, as a woman, I always felt I had to be fairer. Everybody kept putting fairer makeup on me. I even had to do body makeup, and that really bothered me,” she said.
Sameera added that conversations about her size and appearance overshadowed discussions about her acting talent, something she now looks back on with disappointment.
Postpartum Weight Gain And Feeling Isolated
The actress also spoke about the emotional struggles she faced after becoming a mother. She said postpartum weight gain had a major impact on her self-esteem, making her feel judged and lonely.
However, she decided to turn that difficult experience into something positive by supporting other women going through similar struggles.
“When my daughter Nyra was born, I decided that if someone else is going through this, I want to be there for them,” she explained.
Building Confidence Through Social Media
After stepping away from films, Sameera gradually returned to the public eye through social media, where she began sharing unfiltered photos, motherhood experiences and honest conversations about body positivity.
She admitted that trolling initially affected her, but over time she learned to detach from negativity.
Today, she says her online space has evolved into a supportive community of women, where authenticity matters more than unrealistic beauty standards.
Challenging Beauty Norms
Sameera also revealed that when she began embracing her natural appearance, including grey hair and weight gain, some people warned her that audiences would not accept her anymore.
Instead of letting those comments discourage her, she decided to create her own space and speak openly about real-life experiences.
“I told myself — if people like it, they can stay. If they don’t, they can leave,” she said.
Through her journey, Sameera has become a strong advocate for body positivity, self-acceptance, and honest conversations about motherhood and mental health.
