IMD Issues Orange Alert For Mumbai, Thane As Heatwave Conditions Intensify

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai and neighbouring districts including Thane, Palghar and Raigad as temperatures continue to rise above normal levels.
The alert indicates severe heat conditions, prompting authorities to urge residents to take precautions and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
Weather stations across Mumbai recorded unusually high temperatures. The Santacruz observatory reported around 36°C, while Colaba recorded 35°C. The highest temperature was registered at the TBIA station, which touched 37.2°C.
The orange alert comes a day after the IMD had issued a yellow alert for the city and surrounding areas.
What The Alert Levels Mean
The IMD uses a colour-coded system for heat warnings:
- Green Alert: Normal weather conditions
- Yellow Alert: Heat alert, stay updated
- Orange Alert: Severe heat conditions, take precautions
- Red Alert: Extreme heat conditions with serious health risks
Forecast For Mumbai
According to the IMD, Mumbai and its suburbs are expected to witness mostly clear skies, which may further push daytime temperatures higher. The maximum temperature may reach around 38°C, while the minimum is likely to remain near 24°C.
Meanwhile, heatwave alerts have also been issued for districts such as Akola, Amravati and Wardha in Maharashtra.
Precautions Advised
The IMD has advised residents to take several precautions during peak heat hours:
- Avoid direct sunlight and outdoor activity during the afternoon
- Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty
- Wear lightweight, loose cotton clothing
- Cover the head with a hat, cloth or umbrella while stepping outside
- Schedule strenuous work during cooler parts of the day
- Take frequent breaks if working outdoors
Health officials have also warned people to watch for symptoms of heat-related illnesses, including weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating and seizures. Anyone experiencing such symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
Farmers in affected districts have also been advised to continue irrigation activities where necessary to protect crops from heat stress.
