“It Was A Mistake”: Lucknow Man Who Murdered Father, Chopped His Body

A shocking murder case in Lucknow has left residents stunned after a 21-year-old man allegedly killed his father and dismembered the body following an argument over studies and exam preparation.

The accused, Akshat Pratap Singh, told reporters “Galti se ho gaya” (“It happened by mistake”) on Wednesday while being escorted to court under heavy security.

When journalists asked how such a brutal act could have happened “by mistake,” he remained silent. Singh also denied any involvement of his younger sister in the incident.

Dispute Over NEET Exam

According to police, the victim, Manvendra Singh (50), was shot dead by his son at their home in Ashiyana’s Sector L around 4:30 am on February 20.

Officials from the Lucknow Police Commissionerate said the accused used his licensed .315 bore rifle after an argument related to preparation for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

Investigators believe the dispute escalated because the father had been repeatedly urging his son to focus on studies and clear the competitive medical entrance examination.

Attempt to Destroy Evidence

Police said that after committing the murder, the accused allegedly attempted to destroy evidence by cutting the body into pieces using knives and saws.

According to investigators:

  • The severed hands and legs were wrapped in polythene and dumped in bushes near a canal in the Nadarganj area.
  • The torso was hidden inside a blue plastic drum kept on the ground floor of the house.

To divert suspicion, Singh reportedly went to the police station on February 23 and filed a missing person complaint, claiming that his father had suddenly disappeared.

He also allegedly told neighbours that his father had gone to Delhi on urgent work.

Confession During Interrogation

However, during questioning, police said his statements raised suspicion. After sustained interrogation, he allegedly confessed to shooting his father with the licensed rifle.

Based on his disclosure, police recovered:

  • The torso from the drum inside the house
  • The severed limbs from bushes near a canal
  • Two knives and two saws discarded near the Transport Nagar railway track
  • A burnt woollen blanket and ashes from the Anora jungle area in Sarojini Nagar

The rifle used in the crime, along with cartridges and other evidence, has also been seized.

Case Registered, Investigation Ongoing

Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act at Ashiyana police station.

Officials said forensic teams have examined the crime scene and collected evidence, and the investigation is continuing.
