BJP Leader Booked For Alleged Obscene Remarks Against Congress MP S. Jothimani

A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after a police case was registered against BJP functionary Senthilnathan V.V., the party’s Karur district president, for allegedly making obscene and sexually explicit remarks about Congress MP S. Jothimani.

According to police, an FIR was filed at the Karur Town Police Station following a complaint by a local Congress leader. The complaint alleges that the remarks were made during a public protest meeting held on February 10 near the Head Post Office in Karur and were “sexually coloured, degrading, intimidating and defamatory” toward the MP.

The FIR states that the speech amounted to a public attack on the dignity of a woman and was delivered using amplified sound in a public gathering. It further alleges that statements referring to sexual submission were used to shame the MP and that the comments could potentially incite hostility and threaten her safety.

Jothimani strongly condemned the remarks, calling them obscene, defamatory, and intended to publicly humiliate her as a woman representative. She also shared a video on social media, purportedly showing the speech, though its authenticity has not been independently verified by media reports.

Responding to the allegations, Senthilnathan denied wrongdoing and said his comments had been misinterpreted. He claimed certain expressions were used casually and asserted that the protest was directed against what he described as attempts by some women MPs to criticise Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament—an allegation denied by Jothimani and other opposition leaders. When asked about issuing an apology, the BJP leader said he did not believe one was necessary.

Police have registered the case under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to insulting the modesty of a woman, criminal defamation, and statements causing public mischief, along with Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.

The controversy comes amid another incident involving the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP. State party president Nainar Nagendran recently expressed regret over derogatory remarks he made about actor Trisha Krishnan while criticising actor Vijay, which also sparked public backlash.
