Amit Shah–Rahul Gandhi Showdown in Parliament Escalates as ‘Vote Chori’ War of Words Erupts

A heated confrontation unfolded in the Lok Sabha as Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi clashed sharply during a debate on electoral reforms. The tension peaked when Rahul Gandhi challenged Shah to hold a full debate on his recent press conferences alleging irregularities in voter lists.

Amit Shah, visibly unfazed, dismissed the challenge, asserting that no one can dictate the order of his speech and that Parliament would not operate “according to Rahul Gandhi’s wishes.”

Shah accused the Opposition of hypocrisy, saying they raise concerns about voter lists only when they lose elections. “When you win, the voter list is perfect. When you lose—like in Bihar—you blame the list. These double standards won’t work,” he remarked.

He also mocked Gandhi’s earlier press conferences, including one referred to as a “hydrogen bomb,” and accused the Nehru-Gandhi family of being “generational vote thieves.” Rahul Gandhi hit back instantly, demanding answers on why the government had granted immunity to Election Commissioners. Shah, maintaining a firm tone, insisted he would answer in his own sequence.

Rahul Gandhi then said Shah’s defensiveness revealed “fear.”

Shah Targets the Gandhi Family

The Home Minister launched a full-fledged attack on the Nehru-Gandhi political lineage, claiming the first case of vote theft occurred when India’s first Prime Minister was selected. According to Shah, 28 provincial Congress units voted for Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, while only two supported Jawaharlal Nehru—yet Nehru became PM.

Shah also revisited the 1975 episode where Indira Gandhi’s Raibareli victory was struck down by the Allahabad High Court. He alleged she responded by passing a law to grant herself immunity and installing a junior judge as Chief Justice to overturn the decision.

He further pointed at Sonia Gandhi, saying a complaint once alleged she voted before becoming an Indian citizen—sparking immediate protests from Congress MPs.

Opposition Walks Out

Shah then countered the Opposition’s objections to EVMs and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, suggesting their real motive was to keep illegal immigrants on the rolls. This triggered a walkout by Opposition leaders.

Speaking outside Parliament, Rahul Gandhi accused Shah of evading critical questions on EVM transparency and voter list integrity.

PM Modi Reacts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi later praised Shah’s speech on social media, saying the Home Minister had exposed “Opposition lies” and showcased the strength of Indian democracy with “concrete facts.”
